Multimodal biometrics is the fusion of biometric information from across modalities.  A dataset of six biometrics (iris, face, fingerprint, voice, hand geometry, and palm) from 250 subjects (average 4 visits) is available by request to

  • Stephanie Schuckers giving New York Senator Joe Griffo a tour of the NABLAB facilities

    NABLAB Tour

New York State Senator Joe Griffo visits new facility which includes laboratories that support CITeR.

  • Student showing a face through a magnifying glass.

Our recent research has included capture of iris and face videos at distances up to 10 meters. The resulting dataset entitled Quality in Face and Iris Research Ensembe (Q-FIRE) for over 150 subjects is available by emailing

  • Fingerprint molds

CITeR and BioSAL is developing software to detect spoof attacks with artificial fingers on fingerprint systems. To test software, we have an extensive archive of spoof molds and casts from a variety of materials, as well as corresponding live fingerprint images.

  • Stephanie Schuckers demonstrating a finger print.

Liveness detection is the recognition that a fingerprint image is captured from a live finger and is used to reduce vulnerability to spoof attacks.  Clarkson University has fingerprint liveness software which has been licensed and implemented commercially.

In 2011, Clarkson University received a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to form a university site and assume leadership in the Center for Identification Technology Research (CITeR), a National Science Foundation (NSF) Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (I/UCRC).

CITeR's mission is to advance identification technology is strongly focused in the areas of biometric systems and credibility assessment. Our portfolio of activities achieve this mission through cross-cutting research of emerging enabling technologies, interdisciplinary training of scientists and engineers, and facilitation of technology transfer to the private and government sectors through its affiliates.
