CAMP Celebrates Its 20th Anniversary

CAMP conducts focused materials educational activities, supports the training of materials research personnel, and interacts with the materials-related components of the academic programs at Clarkson. As one of the 15 Centers for Advanced Technology (CATs) at New York State Universities, CAMP receives one million dollars from the New York State Foundation for Science, Technology and Innovation (NYSTAR) for research and operating expenses. In addition, CAMP-related work receives several million dollars each year from the federal government and private industry. CAMP's government sponsors are NYSTAR, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Corporate sponsorship for CAMP is provided by Corning, Ferro, IBM, Kodak, NanoDynamics, P&G, United Materials, Xerox, and by many smaller companies.

One of CAMP's major goals is to transfer technology developed by CAMP research to New York State businesses to use in improving their manufacturing methods and in manufacturing new and improved products. Some companies with successful technology transfer from CAMP include Ferro Electronic Material Systems (Penn Yan, NY), NanoDynamics (Buffalo, NY), United Materials /APEX Technologies (Buffalo, NY), Woodruff Block (Parishville, NY) and Ames Goldsmith (Glens Falls, NY).

During the past twenty years, CAMP has had three Directors and three Deputy Directors.

Distinguished University Professor William Wilcox, who was the founder and first Director of CAMP, served as director from 1986 - 1991. Thanks to his and others' hard work, specifically the pioneering research of Professor Egon Matijevic' in Colloid and Surface Science along with the great lobbying effort of Clarkson's Vice President Tom Williamson, the College received a grant of $400,000 in early 1987 from the New York State Science and Technology Foundation.

This award was for the planning and program development of a Center for Advanced Technology (CAT). It was while preparing the CAT proposal that Professor Wilcox came up with the acronym CAMP, to represent Center for Advanced Materials Processing.

CAMP received its first $1 million in 1987. During this year Edward P. McNamara, an International Manager for Carborundum, was hired as the first Deputy Director of CAMP and served until 2006. His primary responsibility was to increase CAMP's interactions with industry. The ground-breaking ceremony for today's location of CAMP was held in 1989 and the building was completed in 1991.

Dr. Raymond Mackay was hired as CAMP Director in September of 1991 and served until September of 1999. Prior to his position at CAMP, Mackay was a professor at Drexel University and from 1983 he was the chief of the Chemical Division and later chief of the Detection Technology Division at the US Army Chemical Research Development and Engineering Center at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.

A CAMP Strategic Plan was developed which consolidated the work into several well-defined and easily understood (by CAMP's industrial customers) areas. This plan formed the basis for all subsequent projects, marketing, and reporting to NYS. An Affiliates program was initiated to accommodate the needs of small businesses. The program was very successful and earned praise from the NYSSTF. With encouragement from IBM and great assistance from the CAMP faculty, particularly Professor Babu, a chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) thrust area was developed along with an annual CMP meeting. Both were extremely successful and have grown significantly under the leadership of Professors Babu and Yuzhuo Li. CAMP is internationally known for Nanoparticle Synthesis and Characterization and for Chemical-Mechanical Planarization (CMP).
