About the Department

In this Section

The Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering is home to more than 350 undergraduate, 50 graduate students, and 20 faculty members engaged in study and research related to both civil and environmental engineering.

Our programs provide students with a strong technical foundation as well as skills in teamwork, communication, management and leadership. Personalized teaching, flexible curricula and world-class research produce alumni ready to take on the engineering world.

While CEE students learn the fundamentals of engineering in the classroom, they also benefit from hands-on learning experiences in the field and in the laboratory, and through extracurricular opportunities.

We offer the following undergraduate and graduate degree programs:

Our professors get to know students as individuals and involve undergraduates in their world-class research. Our faculty members are recognized experts in their respective fields, and receive national awards for excellence in both research and teaching, and innovation in both is encouraged.

Our students also benefit from:

  • Concentrations in architectural, environmental, structural and construction management engineering
  • Flexibility to choose 9 professional electives for a Civil Engineering degree or 6 for an Environmental Engineering degree
  • Many cross-campus minors
  • Undergraduate research opportunities
  • Opportunities for pre-med, pre-physical therapy, pre-law and pre-MBA studies
  • Experiential learning opportunities through collegiate design competitions
  • High job placement and graduate school acceptance rates

Bethann Parmelee '12, an environmental engineering major, spent this past summer attempting to turn two waste products from a local solid waste management facility into biofuel with a grant from National Grid.
