Katharine “Kiki” Fausel ’16 was one
of two Clarkson students who spent
the spring semester in Albany as
part of the New York State Assembly
Internship Program.
In a happy coincidence, Fausel was
assigned to work in the office of
freshman Assemblyman Dan Stec
(R-Queensbury) of the 114
th
District
and a 1990 graduate of Clarkson.
Fausel learned about the
internship program through Clarkson’s
Career Center. For Fausel, a
self-described “avid fan of politics,”
a semester in Albany was too good
to pass up. “I find policymaking and
debate irresistible,” she says.
STUDENT-ALUMNI RELATIONSHIPS
Ms. Fausel Goes to Albany
The day-to-day.
Since we were a ranking office on the Environmental Conservation
Committee, lobbying groups beyond those from our own district were interested in
meeting with us. I prepared the folders for the assemblyman’s committee meetings
and attended many of them, and was entrusted to prepare the daily bill calendars for
session days. I also answered the phones, made appointments and maintained the
assemblyman’s calendar.
Lessons learned.
I learned everything about the life and times of bills, from
their drafting stages to their eventual death or signing into law. I’ve learned about
lobbying. I went to public hearings, sat in on constituency meetings, sorted through
support and opposition memos, and spoke to members of the public who just
needed to be heard.
What most surprised me was the amount of faxes we receive, coupled with
how involved the public voice really is in legislation. The assembly truly is
“The People’s House.”
Most memorable experience.
The first day I sat in on session. It was the
opening day, and all the interns were guided through the looming halls and
cathedral-like staircases to a small, guarded door. We had all just gotten our
temporary ID badges, and wore them around our necks with pride. We were all
nervous as we descended the steps of the balconies where we were to be seated.
The speaker called the floor to session, and proceeded with standard
introductions and comments. Then he introduced the intern class, and we stood and
were applauded by the assembly. I felt like I was soaring that day.
Lasting impact.
I’d like to pursue a job in the public sector, and to work in
intelligence. I am immensely proud of my country, and of New York state as
well. I cannot wait to continue my path of public service and bettering our
nation as a whole!
