Research Interests
Computer-aided image processing techniques are developed as a tool to quantify microstructures. Current projects include quantification of microcracking and its influence on thermomechanical properties of carbon-carbon composites. A continuum damage mechanics approach is used to connect structure to stress/strain behavior. A related project investigates the mechanics of coating cracks in high temperature material coatings. Work is also underway to develop methods to quantify woven reinforcement yarn shape and how it affects mechanical properties, such as interlaminar shear strength. Another project involves studying the role of fiber misalignment as a quality control issue in resin matrix composite prepreg.
