The Clarkson-Wilbur Connection

POTSDAM, N.Y.-- When Mark Holmes received a diploma and a handshake from Clarkson University President Denny Brown during Clarkson University's 104th Commencement Exercises in May, the two might have shared a moment of conversation as their picture was taken for posterity.

But, the two share something else: diplomas from the same high school.

As a General Military Course cadet in the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) during the 1993-94 and 1994-95 school years, Holmes was a member of the Unarmed Drill Team --which marched in local parades and competed in AFROTC Drill Competitions-- and the Color Guard. He also rode on the equestrian team and competed in the annual Western Show. In the Fall 1995 semester, he studied at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario.

Beginning in the Spring 1996 semester and continuing up until graduation, Holmes was a member of the AFROTC Professional Officer Course member. In his senior year, he received a one-year incentive scholarship.

During the 1996-97 school year, Holmes held positions of leadership in AFROTC. In the fall, he was a Cadet Corps Group Commander, and in the spring, he was a Cadet Corps Commander, leading an 88-member Cadet Wing.

Holmes is a candidate for a team that will represent the United States in the Interallied Confederation of Reserved Officers Competition in Alborg, Denmark from July 28-August 1. He is in the competition phase of the selection process, receiving training in marksmanship, land navigation, goal setting, nutrition, fitness, mental preparation and problem solving. Final selections are to be made on Thursday, July 10.

Clarkson University is an independent institution located in northern New York, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains. The University has 2,670 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in its schools of Business, Engineering, Science, and Liberal Arts, and its Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management program.
