Clarkson University President Denny Brown has granted tenure to Susan E. Powers of Potsdam, effective February 13. Powers is also promoted to associate professor as of that date.Susa Powers

Powers has been an assistant professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering since joining the Clarkson faculty in 1992. Her research interests include understanding the fate of pollutants such as gasoline, coal tars and chlorinated solvents in groundwater systems. Pollutants like these are responsible for contamination at nearly 75 percent of sites with groundwater pollution.

Powers’ current projects include assessing the migration of these pollutants in groundwater systems complicated by aquifier hetrogenities and non-ideal chemical mixtures. Understanding the effects of these complexities is required in order to effectively clean the groundwater. Powers has also served as a faculty adviser to Clarkson’s award-winning International Environmental Design Competition team.

Awards and honors which Powers has received include the 1997 Dow Outstanding New Faculty Award of the American Society for Engineering Education, Clarkson’s Outstanding New Teacher and Outstanding New Adviser awards, and the Alcoa Faculty Award. She has also received research grants from the National Science Foundation, General Motors and the Environmental Protection Association, among others.
Powers has published in many scientific journals, including Water Resources Research, the Journal of Contaminant Hydrology, and Hazardous Waste and Hazardous Materials.

Previously, Powers worked as a lecturer and research assistant at the University of Michigan and as a project engineer at Engineering -Science in Liverpool, N.Y. Powers earned her doctoral degree in environmental engineering from the University of Michigan, and both her master of science in civil and environmental engineering and bachelor of science in chemical engineering degrees from Clarkson University.
