Gary Kelly Named Clarkson University Vice President For Student Affairs

Potsdam, N.Y. — Clarkson University President Denny Brown has appointed Gary F. Kelly, of Potsdam, vice president for Student Affairs. Kelly has served as associate dean of students/Student Development since 1988 and as headmaster of The Clarkson School since 1982.kelly

“Gary Kelly has worked closely with this University’s students for 25 years,” said President Brown. “As headmaster of The Clarkson School, he has become known to the students as a friend and mentor. We look forward to his expanded role in guiding the Student Affairs area.”

In his new position, Kelly will be responsible for the Dean of Students office, Student Development, Athletics and the Cheel Campus Center. He will also retain his duties as headmaster of The Clarkson School.

Kelly came to Clarkson in 1973 as director of the Student Development Center, and has held various titles in Student Affairs over the years. He was involved in the founding and original administration of The Clarkson School, the University’s early entrance program for talented and accelerated high-school students, which is just completing its 20th year of operation. Kelly has been an adjunct faculty member in the Psychology Department for the past two years and is the author of over 40 articles and books in the fields of counseling, education, and human relations, including the award-winning book for teenagers, Sex and Sense, and the college text Sexuality Today: The Human Perspective. He has both an M.Ed. in counseling and a B.S. in biology from St. Lawrence University.

Kelly and his wife, Betsy A. Kelly, have two daughters: Casey, a student at Wellesley College, and Chelsea, a freshman at Potsdam High School.
