Potsdam Police Sergeant Cops Clarkson Degree While Working Full Time

Most people working a full shift don't have much energy left for heavy-duty activities after work, let alone heavy thinking. But Potsdam Village Police Sergeant Neal P. Martin isn't most people. He's the first Potsdam Police officer to earn his bachelor's degree while working full time on the force. And not just any degree. Martin received his bachelor's degree in management and business administration with great distinction -- a grade-point average of more than 3.75.martin

"Completing a degree at a prestigious university is an arduous task under any circumstances," says Police Chief Terry McKendree. "The department is particularly proud of Sgt. Martin's ability to do so while maintaining his difficult work schedule."

Martin, who's been on the force since 1992, decided to go back for his bachelor's degree after being promoted to sergeant in 1995. He already had an associate's degree in criminal justice, and the B.S. seemed like the next logical step after getting into management. Martin was able to study at Clarkson for one-third the usual tuition, since his wife, Tina, works at the University.

"I believe I was able to become a more effective shift supervisor by implementing some management techniques from my organizational behavior classes," says Martin.

Martin is among the growing number of Potsdam Police officers who have earned a college degree. The Department strongly encourages enrollment in any college course.

"Having police officers study at either Clarkson or SUNY Potsdam furthers our already strong and positive relationships," says McKendree. "We've already begun to discuss partnerships with both schools, which will provide incentives for our police officers to enroll in a wide variety of courses."
