Clarkson University Takes A First-place Prize And Best Paper In Environmental Design Contest

The Clarkson University team took a first-place task prize in the ninth Annual Environmental Design Contest held at New Mexico State University this week. The Clarkson team was also awarded the "Best Paper Presentation."

Contest judges said that the Clarkson paper was the best in the contest's history, and that future teams would use it as a model in creating their papers.

More than 50 teams and 300 students competed in the Waste-Management Education & Research Consortium (WERC)-sponsored event, which combines real-world waste management and remediation problems and students' creative solutions. The Clarkson team's task involved recovering mine tailings.

Four of the twenty Clarkson team members traveled to New Mexico for the competition, along with Civil and Environmental Professor Susan E. Powers. Civil and Environmental Engineering Professors Stefan J. Grimberg and Thomas L. Theis also served as advisers.

This is the eighth consecutive year that Clarkson has sent a team to the competition.
