Public Invited To Wednesday's Rail Safety Seminar

On Wednesday, April 21, New York Operation Lifesaver in conjunction with Conrail will hold a Rail Safety Seminar at Clarkson University. This free event starts at 9 a.m. in the Cheel Campus Center Barben Rooms.

The hope of Operation Lifesaver is to "raise the awareness of the public as to the dangers of highway-rail grade crossings and to trespassing on railroad property. Each year 25 to 35 New York State residents loose their lives in this fashion. We believe if we can improve the public's perception of these dangers, these statistics can be significantly lowered."

The Rail Safety Seminar will consist of sessions in the morning on grade-crossing issues, school bus concerns, trespass issues, and Operation Lifesaver.

In the afternoon, Conrail railroad equipment, an engine and several different types of freight cars, will on display at the railroad siding by Sandstone Drive for the public to view. Conrail employees will be there to demonstrate the important features and what part they play in the railroad environment.

Operation Lifesaver says "we encourage the public to attend these sessions. We believe it could saves their lives."
