Ralph E. Hawes Jr. Awarded Clarkson University Honorary Degree

Ralph E. Hawes Jr., managing principal of Hawes & Associates and retired executive vice president-Missiles and Electronics of the General Dynamics Corporation, today (May 16) received an honorary doctor of science degree at Clarkson University's 106th Commencement in Potsdam, N.Y.

Ralph E. Hawes Jr. is the managing principal of Hawes & Associates, a management consulting business advising government agencies and aerospace/defense companies on technical, systems, and business-related matters. From 1988 until his retirement in 1991, he was executive vice president-Missiles and Electronics of the General Dynamics Corporation.

Hawes earned a B.S. in electrical engineering from Clarkson in 1955, and an M.E. in 1969 through the Engineering Executive Program at the University of California, Los Angeles.

After beginning his career at the Clarke H. Joy Co. in Bay Village, Ohio, he joined General Dynamics in 1956 as an electronics engineer for the Pomona (California) Division. Subsequently he rose through numerous technical and management positions of increasing responsibility related to advanced systems design, missile guidance system design, program development, and production for tactical missile and electronic systems. In these capacities he gained national recognition as a pioneer in the design, development, and production of tactical missiles using homing guidance techniques, and holds technical patents on several systems.

As executive vice president-Missiles and Electronics, he held senior management responsibility for four General Dynamics divisions with a combined revenue of nearly $2.5 billion and more than 20,000 employees.

Among numerous other professional, educational and civic affiliations, he has served the Clarkson Board of Trustees as chairman and on numerous committees; has served as a member of the Board of the American Defense Preparedness Association; is a founding member of the president's council at Cal. Poly University at Pomona; and has served the Boy Scouts of America in several volunteer leadership positions.
