U.S. News: Clarkson Among Best National Universities And Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs

Clarkson University in Potsdam, N.Y., is among the nation's Best National Universities and has one of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs in the nation, according to the year 2000 edition of U.S. News & World Report's America's Best Colleges, which hits the World Wide Web today, and newsstands on Monday.

U.S. News listed Clarkson as one of the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs at schools whose highest degree is a Ph.D. The magazine says that schools like Clarkson who "provide undergraduate engineering education through a Ph.D. program typically offer undergraduates more research opportunities, a broader range of course offerings, and coursework that draws on research being done at the doctoral level." The ranking is based on ratings by deans and senior faculty of Clarkson's peer institutions. Others on the list included Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stanford University, California Institute of Technology and Cornell University.

In determining the Best Colleges, U.S. News categorized 1,400 accredited four-year institutions placing Clarkson in the category of "National Universities." Within this elite category, Clarkson is placed in the second tier, or top half. Among the schools in that tier, Clarkson ranks fourth in the percentage of alumni giving at 30 percent, and tenth in average SAT/ACT scores (measured by the 25th to 75th percentile).

Clarkson University has 2,700 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in programs in its schools of Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Science, and in its Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management program.
