New York’s Capital Region played host to students from Clarkson University and Syracuse University at the General Electric Leadership Conference held recently in Schenectady and Albany.ge99

Thirty-eight Clarkson students attended the conference, each of them selected by a team of faculty and administrators. Also attending were Kathryn B. Johnson, executive director of the Career and Professional Development Center (CPDC); Catherine Avadikian, director of University Studies; James J. Carroll, associate professor of electrical and computer engineering; and Michael H. Ensby, director of Clarkson’s Shipley Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship.

“This was an excellent opportunity for Clarkson students to learn more about the corporate world and how they can better transition to the workplace upon graduation,” said Johnson. “The two-day event was a tremendous success for General Electric and the students who participated.”

The conference provided all of the students with an overview of GE and the many career opportunities available. Students participated in a module on name brand recognition, workshops on e-business, the transition from college-to-work and learning styles. The students also took tours of GE’s Power Systems manufacturing plant in Schenectady and the Corporate Research & Development Center.

In addition, the students participated in a group dinner at Empire Plaza in downtown Albany, where they mingled with 30 GE representatives. The conference closed with a slide show of candid photos taken during the event.

“We wanted students to understand the opportunities they have with us, what the environment is like, and what GE people are like,” said Dave DiMaggio, manager of Education and Development, GE Supply. “The more they interface with us, the more they know about us, the better the chance that students can make an informed career choice.”

DiMaggio said this was the first time GE hosted a conference involving Clarkson and Syracuse students. A second conference may be scheduled for the spring of 2001, he said.
