Goodyear Awards Clarkson University $10,000

Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company of Akron, Ohio, has awarded Clarkson University $10,000 in support of SPEED (Student Projects for Engineering Experience & Design) and four student organizations promoting diversity and professional development on campus.

"Goodyear recognizes the need for change in the way student engineers are taught," said Tim Toppen, director R&D- Goodyear Engineered Products. “The SPEED program prepares students to compete for today's engineering jobs by providing knowledge and skills required by competitive companies, like Goodyear."

The SPEED program advocates multidisciplinary, project-based learning opportunities for all students at the institution. Specific emphasis is on the recruitment and retention of talented students of color, and women, who traditionally are underrepresented in science and technology professions.

Ranging from a Formula SAE car team to a concrete canoe team, students in more than 15 project groups develop a business plan and then apply a holistic approach to engineering design, parts fabrication and marketing problems.

Student organizations receiving Goodyear support for their ongoing professional development and cultural awareness activities include the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), the Society of
Hispanic Professional Engineering (SHPE), the American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES), and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).

"The SPEED program and leadership opportunities in professional societies are just another example of how Clarkson is moving the learning process beyond traditional textbooks and lectures," says Anthony Collins, Clarkson vice president for Academic Affairs. "With these types of experiences, Clarkson students sharpen their communication skills and attain knowledge required to work
effectively in corporate environments, like Goodyear, to whom they will look for employment upon graduation."
