Clarkson University alumnus Richard D. Church of Afton, N.Y., has pledged $25,000 to create an endowment fund for the Clarkson Theatre

Church graduated from Clarkson in 1963 with a degree in electrical engineering. His company, “two forty-eight,” deals with water purification systems to produce potable water. Today he is an active participant in the Clarkson Theatre Company and has been an active patron, actor, lecturer, vocalist and mentor to various schools and theatre groups since his undergraduate days.

In 1998, while lecturing at Clarkson, he met the Clarkson Theatre Company. Since then, realizing the abundance of acting talent, but the lack of financial support, he has decided to create an endowed fund that would provide operating support for the annual shows and performances presented in the Sara Snell Theatre in Clarkson’s Snell Hall.

As the endowment grows it will provide funds for equipment, materials and promotional expenses for the company.

“A vibrant theatre, especially on an academic campus, is such a great asset to the University,” said Church. “It must be promoted and cherished as a place where ideas can be forcefully and innocently portrayed by students for their own understanding.”

The newly endowed fund is open to gifts from any individuals who wish to support the Theatre Company. For more information on the endowment, please contact Sal Cania, 315-268-7778.

The Clarkson Theatre Company was founded in 1975 with a production of "Guys and Dolls."  Since then, the company has produced two full-length productions every year in Snell Hall. Five years ago, in response to increased demand, a third production was added to the schedule in the form of a one-act festival.  The Clarkson Theatre Company has a membership of approximately 45 students, faculty and community members, and entertains more than a thousand people annually.

The company is now preparing for their spring show, "Noises Off" by Michael Frayn. "Noises Off" is a hilarious farce about a group of actors whose performances just get worse as time goes by, eventually degenerating into complete chaos.

Performances are April 20, 21, and 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Snell Hall. There is also a matinee performance on Saturday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $3 for students and senior citizens, and $5 for adults. Tickets will be available at the door.
