Local Fifth-graders Learn The Joys Of Math And Science From Special Partnership With Clarkson, Corning And Boces

A group of local grade school students showed their enthusiasm for mathematics and science at this year’s Gateways luncheon at Clarkson University.

Kathy Maynard’s fifth-grade class at St. Lawrence Central Elementary School, Brasher Falls, were special guests at the luncheon; the students have been involved in a year-long business educational partnership with Corning Inc., the Board of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and a graduate student team from the Clarkson University School of Business. The goal of the program was to improve students’ math and science competencies and to open their eyes to the possibilities for life beyond the classroom.

The program began with an idea to revitalize the St. Lawrence Central School planetarium, which attracted the attention of Pat McKeown of BOCES Office of Educational Partnerships and Greg Murray, an engineer from the Corning plant in Canton.  During the process, an idea to incorporate a planetarium theme into Maynard’s fifth grade class came about, and with the support of principal Pam Hirsch and the addition of the Clarkson graduate business team, the idea became reality.

Murray spoke to Maynard’s class about Corning, telescope mirrors and engineering and other careers.  He then wrote math and science-oriented case studies for the students to solve with the help of the Clarkson team. The team also taught the students how to use computers and the PowerPoint program to create and deliver a presentation.  The class also visited the planetarium on the SUNY Potsdam campus.

At the Gateways luncheon, employers, superintendents, principals and others heard first hand how employers could help bring real life to the classroom.  Murray provided an employer perspective, while Clarkson MBA students Nicholas Strom-Olsen and Jim Olek shared their point experiences as part of the graduate school team.  Then, some of Maynard’s students, including Matt Crowley, Amanda Felix, Garth Griffin, Colleen Hallahan-Tyo and Patrick Munson told about all the great things they learned.
