Procter & Gamble Fund Awards $20,000 Grant To Clarkson

Clarkson University recently received a $20,000 departmental grant from the Procter & Gamble Fund for unrestricted support in the School of Engineering and the Career & Professional Development Center.  Awards such as this one are provided to institutions like Clarkson that have a broad base of partnership interaction with Procter & Gamble, such as recruiting, collaborative research and alumni leadership.

The Department of Chemical Engineering received the largest portion of the grant and directed it toward a variety of projects, including support of undergraduate laboratory upgrades, travel funds for faculty conferences, new computers, and a site license for chemical process simulation software used in a senior design class. 

"Such gifts are vital to the continued progress of our departments," says Professor Ross Taylor, chair of the Chemical Engineering Department.

As a key school liaison for P&G and associate director of Global Hair Care Product Development, Lisa Napolione, Clarkson class of '87, leads a team of more than 90 other Clarkson alumni to open doors for recruiting, research, and resources like the departmental grant program. 

"Partnering with Clarkson is a natural fit for P&G,” Napolione says.  “This association helps me and my colleagues in our jobs and lets us give something personally back to the University, which has made such a difference for us." 

This year, four of the top graduating seniors in chemical engineering joined the P&G workforce and another three are participating in cooperative education and internship opportunities at corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In addition to departmental grants the Procter & Gamble Fund also matches employee contributions.  Over the last five years, the company has philanthropically contributed more than $245,000 to Clarkson.

"Clarkson's partnership with Procter & Gamble exemplifies the institution's strong corporate relations and dedicated alumni network," says Michael E. Cooper, vice president for Institutional Advancement at the University. 

The gift is part of “The Campaign for Clarkson," a $70-million comprehensive fund-raising effort that was publicly announced in October 1998.  In addition to student financial aid, other priorities of the campaign include support for academic programs and the new Bertrand H. Snell Hall.  To date, $45 million has been raised toward the $70-million total campaign goal.
