POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Norris D. Jones of Oswego, N.Y., founder of J&M Power Systems and a former consultant to Sithe Energy, has received the Golden Knight Award from his alma mater, Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York.  Presented each year during Reunion Weekend, Clarkson's most prestigious alumni award is given to alumni who have distinguished themselves either by service to Clarkson through Alumni Association activities or have demonstrated outstanding career achievement, bringing distinction to themselves and to Clarkson.njones

Jones received his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Clarkson in 1950.  He spent the first 10 years of his career employed by the Bailey Meter Company and Ames Ironworks, before establishing J&M Power Systems in 1960, a corporation focused on the development of industrial heating and ventilating systems, and special heat recovery technologies including wood-fired boiler plants, and co-generation systems.  Jones’ company was involved in the construction of the wood-fired steam plant in Snell Hall, used to heat Clarkson’s downtown campus.  In 1990, J&M Power Systems became associated with the Sithe Energy Marketing Corporation, leading to the construction of the Independence Power Plant Project in Oswego, New York.  Jones remained as a consultant to Sithe Energy before retiring in 1995.

Jones has been very devoted to civic and charitable activities in his hometown of Oswego, New York.  The Hiawatha Council of the Boy Scouts of America, Oswego Hospital, and the Springside Housing Project have benefited from his strong sense of civic duty.  He is considered the founding father of the Oswego Minor Hockey Association and the Oswego Maritime Foundation.

Jones has also displayed a lifelong devotion to his alma mater.  He has been one of the principle organizers of the annual reunions of the “Holcroft Gang,” an enthusiastic group of alumni who developed strong bonds of friendship while living together as students in Holcroft House on the Clarkson campus.  Jones has been a member of the Alumni Association Board of Governors and served for many years as Activity Chair for class reunions.

Jones has been very active in alumni activities in the Syracuse and Oswego areas, serving as a Regional Chapter Board member and event host, and has been responsible for recruiting numerous new students as an Alumni Admission Program volunteer.  Jones returns to campus often and has addressed students as an Alumni Career Day speaker.  He has taken personal interest in the Honors Program at Clarkson and has established an endowed fund to support that program.  Jones is also a volunteer for the Campaign for Clarkson, serving as a Partner for the Class of 1950.

Clarkson University is an independent institution located in northern New York, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains.  The University has 2,902 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in programs in its schools of Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Science, and its Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management program.
