Clarkson University Professor Appointed To EPA Science Advisory Board

Thomas L. Theis, Bayard D. Clarkson Distinguished Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering and director of the Center for Environmental Management at Clarkson University, has been appointed by EPA administrator Carol Browner to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Science Advisory Board. Theis will serve on the Environmental Engineering Committee, which assesses engineering and risk issues, and considers the best available treatment technologies.

Theis is also a member of the EEC's Environmental Modeling Subcommittee, which relies on models to guide them through their problem solving efforts. The subcommittee assesses the models, determining their accuracy and appropriateness for application to problem solving.

Congress established the Science Advisory Board to provide engineering and science advice to the EPA. The board serves as a council of peers to evaluate the soundness of the technical foundations upon which the EPA establishes its policy positions.

The SAB comprises distinguished scientists, engineers and economists who are recognized, non-governmental experts in their respective fields from the academia, industry and environmental communities throughout the United States and beyond.

As director of Clarkson's Center for Environmental Management (CEM) Theis oversees interdisciplinary environmental research and educational activities at Clarkson.
