Lecture On 'the Future Of Communications' To Be Presented At Clarkson On March 1

Cherry A. Murray, physical science research senior vice president, Bell Laboratories, Lucent Technologies, will present a lecture on “The Future of Communications” on Thursday, March 1, 4:15 p.m. in room 360 of the Clarkson University Science Center. The lecture is preceded by a reception at 3:30 p.m.

Recent monumental advances in communications and technology are the subject of Murray’s lecture, “The Future of Communications,” part of the sixth Shipley Distinguished Lectureship, presented by Clarkson University’s Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP).

Murray explains that communications technologies are having dramatic impacts on society: “We live in an era of astounding technological transformation – the information revolution – that is as profound as the two great technological revolutions of the past – the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions.”

Murray will present a technical lecture, “Video Microscopy of Colloidal Crystals,” on Friday, March 2, at 11 a.m. in room 213 of the Bertrand H. Snell Hall.

The public is cordially invited to attend both lectures.

Murray, who joined Bell Labs in 1978 as a technical staff member after receiving her bachelor’s and doctoral degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, says innovations such as cell phones, DVD players, digital TV, decoding of the human genome, MRI’s, wearable computers, the Internet and the World Wide Web became reality because of “solid technical foundations created through decades of research in the underlying basic science of which physics is a major component.”

The Shipley Lectureship Series brings guest lecturers to campus annually to speak on a technical subject. They were initiated in 1994 through a generous gift from Charles and Lucia Shipley through the Shipley Family Foundation for the purpose of promoting scholarly achievement at Clarkson by helping to provide the opportunity for idea exchange and active learning.
