Clarkson Receives Equipment For Internet Engineering Teaching Laboratory

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Clarkson University is one of eight universities recently awarded state-of-the-art networking equipment valued at $40,100 by the Cooperative Association for Internet Data Analysis (CAIDA) for a hands-on Internet Teaching Laboratory.

With this new equipment, Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science Jeanna Matthews will contribute to the advancement of Internet engineering knowledge and curriculum innovation through on-site research and development of classroom exercises. The results can be shared with academic and industry colleagues.

CAIDA is a collaborative effort among industrial, academic, and government participants to research and promote greater cooperation in designing and maintaining a robust, scalable Internet infrastructure.

"The Internet Teaching Labs are a natural outgrowth of CAIDA's Internet Engineering Curriculum project that aims to improve curriculum resources as a step toward better preparing the next generation of network engineers and technology workers," said Aubrey Bush, director of the Division of Advanced Networking Infrastructure and Research of the National Science Foundation (NSF), one of the agencies helping CAIDA sponsor this grant competition.

"We are particularly excited that CAIDA, through their successful collaborative relationships with the networking industry, has been able to establish this program to place modern networking equipment into university labs."

The donation to Clarkson includes routers, interface cards and power supplies from Cisco Systems and Cable & Wireless. MCI WorldCom provided the engineering talent to support the design and implementation of the facilities. The other recipients in this round of funding included Columbia University, RPI, University of Massachusetts, California State - Hayward, Sonoma State University, University of Alabama, University of Arizona and James Madison University.

Matthews, who joined Clarkson last year after completing her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkley, said, “This equipment will significantly enhance the laboratory experience we provide students in our networking courses as well as related individual student projects that are quite popular at Clarkson. I am extremely pleased that CAIDA recognized Clarkson’s commitment to this endeavor.“

The University is in the midst of the “Campaign for Clarkson," which includes fundraising priorities for laboratories, new construction, student financial aid and academic excellence initiatives. To date, the University has raised more than $49 million toward its $70-million goal.
