The Clarkson University Partners in Education (PIE) Program recently dedicated a park bench in front of the A.A. Kingston (AAK) Middle School in Potsdam.piebench

The dedication of the bench culminated a yearlong project, in which a team of Clarkson women science and engineering students mentored a group of middle school girls through the solution of an environmental engineering problem.  The students’ goal was to reduce solid waste by using a waste product as an aggregate in concrete, then design and build a concrete bench using that waste-mixture.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), Partners in Education (PIE) is an enrichment and mentoring program in which Clarkson professors and students mentor girls at the middle-school level. The program’s main goal is to expose girls to the possibilities that exist for them in science, math and engineering studies and careers, and provide girls the opportunity to work with female role models in a hands-on technology project within the support of their peer group.

Twenty-one eighth-grade girls from AAK were among those involved in the project, along with Clarkson students Nicole A. Inouye ’03 (chemical engineering, Le Roy, N.Y.), Amy B. Lane ’01 (civil and environmental engineering, Marlboro, Mass.), Patricia M. McTigue ’01 (chemical engineering, Shelton, Conn.), Jennifer M. Stowe ’02 (chemical and civil engineering, Potsdam, N.Y.), Stacy L. Streeter ’02 (mathematics and computer science, Syracuse, N.Y.), Susan M. Templin ’01 (interdisciplinary engineering and management, Glenshaw, Penn.), Catherine Wareing ’01 (mechanical and aeronautical engineering, Peacock, N.H.) and Lindsay R. Wilkins ’03 (environmental science and policy, Palmyra, N.Y.).

The project was administered by Clarkson Associate Professor Amy K. Zander and Research Assistant Jan E. DeWaters, and AAK teachers Jim Baxter and Brad Filiatrault.
