Leona Karnali Honored With Levinus Clarkson Award

AT COMMENCEMENTLeona A. Karnali of Jakarta, Indonesia, daughter of Mr. Harry Karnali and Mrs. Yanti Handojo of Jakarta, Indonesia, received the Levinus Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's 108th Commencement Ceremony on Sunday, May 13.

Established in 1906 by University founders Elizabeth and Frederica Clarkson in memory of their brother, Levinus, the scholarship was first awarded in 1909.

Karnali, a senior mechanical engineering major, was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty, based on her scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement.

Four years ago, while I was still adjusting with the culture and struggling with the language, I did not dream I would go this far, said Karnali. "Looking back, I feel fortunate to be able to come to the U.S.A. and gain valuable friendship and experiences at Clarkson. I am very honored to receive this award."

A presidential scholar for the last eight semesters and a member of the Honors Program, Karnali received mention on the National Dean's list and was also selected as an All-American Scholar. Her many awards and honors include the Most Promising Junior of the Year Award in 2000; the Norman L. Rea Award from the Department of Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering; the Phalanx Commendable Service Award; the Andrea K. Bridge and John O'Beirne Endowed Scholarship; the scholarship; the ASME outstanding student member award, and the International Gas Turbine Institute Scholarship. This past spring, she took first prize in the oral presentation competition at the ASME Regional Conference in Schenectady, N.Y.

In the classroom, Karnali minored in mathematics and recently completed her undergraduate thesis, "Fatigue Behaviors of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel." Outside of the classroom, she was just as active, volunteering with Special Olympics and the Humane Society during her summers as an intern for GE Medical Systems in Milwaukee.
