Clarkson Senior Captures First Prize In Asme Regional Paper Competition

Leona A. Karnali of Jakarta, Indonesia, a senior at Clarkson University, received first prize in an oral presentation competition that took place during the recent American Society of Mechanical Engineering Region III Student Conference, hosted by Union College in Schenectady, N.Y.

Karnali, who is graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering, took top honors for her paper "Fatigue Behavior of 2205 Duplex Stainless Steel." Her work was based on research she conducted with Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Professor David Morrison.

Karnali received a $300 cash award and a fully funded trip to the ASME Congress this November in New York City. There, she and 12 other regional winners will present their papers in a national competition.

The regional competition featured 88 presenters, two from each of the region's 44 schools. In addition to Karnali, Elizabeth S. Kenney, a senior MAE major from North Conway, N.H., also represented Clarkson in the competition, presenting a paper on "Structural Analysis of an Aircraft During Steady Level Flight."
