Michael T. Walsh, Jr., son of Barb and Mike Walsh of Downingtown, Pa., has been named the 2001-2002 Clarkson University Mike Morrison Memorial Scholar.

Morrison entered Clarkson in September 1985 as a "walk-on" (non-scholarship) forward from Bellingham, Mass., and went on to star for and captain the Clarkson University Golden Knight varsity hockey team during his senior year (1988-89).walshm

Morrison was killed in a tragic construction accident several months after his graduation.  His parents, Ed and Shirley Morrison, and family and friends established the Mike W. Morrison Scholarship Trust, a private foundation, for the purpose of creating a scholarship fund at Clarkson in their son's name.

Michael Walsh, who is a Project Areté (business and liberal arts) major, will be a junior at Clarkson in the fall and is a goaltender with the Golden Knights hockey team. He is the ninth recipient of the esteemed scholarship, named for the late Clarkson hockey star Mike Morrison.

“I am pleased to be selected for this scholarship,” said Walsh. “Mike Morrison was the embodiment of what it means to be a Clarkson Hockey player, on and off the ice. In receiving this honor, I hope that I can do the Morrison family justice and represent them well as a student and as an athlete.”

“Mike Walsh is not only an extraordinary talented athlete, but also a serious student and a character member of our team,” said Clarkson Head Hockey Coach Mark Morris.” We feel extremely fortunate to have him on our squad and on our campus. He has blossomed as an outstanding goaltender this past season and has been an inspirational member of our team.

“Like Mike Morrison, Mike Walsh has extraordinary work habits and an intense desire to win. We’re pleased that he was selected for this award. He embodies many of same traits as Mike Morrison did.”

In his sophomore campaign, Walsh started only one of the team’s first 15 games of the season, but then saw action in the remaining 21 games and played a major part in the Golden Knights’ ninth Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) regular season title. In 17 conference games, Walsh, an All-ECAC Second Team selection, produced a 1.65 goals against average (GAA), the lowest by any ECAC goalie since 1969. His .824 winning percentage (14 wins, three losses) was the best among all league goalies, and his.931 saves percentage was good for second among league goalies. Walsh’s overall record was 15-4-1 with a .922 save percentage, a 1.86 GAA and four shutouts.

Walsh is also productive off the ice. As a student, he was named to the 2000-2001 ECAC All-Academic team.

Clarkson University is an independent institution located in northern New York, in the foothills of the Adirondack Mountains.  The University has 2,877 graduate and undergraduate students enrolled in programs in its schools of Business, Engineering, Liberal Arts, and Science, and its Interdisciplinary Engineering and Management program.
