New York State Principal's Academy Held At Clarkson

Thirty-three elementary, middle- and high-school principals from throughout New York State recently took part in a Principal’s Academy at Clarkson University designed to improve leadership skills.

Participants in the Academy analyzed data provided to their schools by the State Department of Education, exchanged ideas for school improvement plans and received training in facilitating change. The Academy was facilitated by Clarkson University Organizational Studies Professors Sanjay T. Menon and Peter C. Diplock, Clarkson Shipley Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship Executive Director Stub Estey, and St. Lawrence University Professor Jim Waterson.

The Principal’s Academy was made possible through a grant awarded to Menon and Diplock by Herkimer-Fulton-Hamilton-Otsego BOCES.

An ongoing research project by Diplock will identify schemas associated with existing and ideal leadership practices, compare school leaders’ perspectives on educational leadership with ideal practices, and identify strategies for narrowing the gap.

The Educational Leadership Academy of Northern New York (ELANNY), established in July, assisted in hosting the Principal’s Academy. It provides leadership training for school administrators.

ELANNY is a joint effort of the Associated Colleges of the St. Lawrence Valley and is located in Bertrand H. Snell Hall as part of the Shipley Center for Leadership and Entrepreneurship at Clarkson. By combining the talents and experience from the schools of business administration and educational administration at the four colleges and universities, ELANNY will play a unique role in developing educational leaders in northern New York and eastern Canada.

ELANNY has been funded initially by Clarkson University and St. Lawrence University and is directed by Dine Kennedy.  The steering committee includes Menon, Diplock, Estey, Waterson, St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES Superintendent Linda Gush, Potsdam Central School District Superintendent Sylvia Root, and Hermon-DeKalb Central School Principal Tim Richards.
