Clarkson University Doctoral Student Wins $25,000 Air Pollution Research Scholarship

Young-Ji Han, a doctoral student in civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson University, was selected as a recipient of a scholarship from the Air Pollution Educational and Research Grant (APERG) Program for the 2001-02 school year.

Han, who resides in Potsdam, N.Y., is one of four winners who will receive $25,000 from the Mid-Atlantic States Section of the Air and Waste Management Association (MASS-AWMA). She was selected for her research, titled “Source Identification of Vapor Phase Mercury in New York State.”

“It is a very prestigious award given out by one of the oldest environmental organizations in existence,” said Thomas M. Holsen, Han’s adviser and a professor of civil and environmental engineering at Clarkson. “Competition for the award is very intense, since only four awards are made each year.”

Han received her bachelor’s degree in environmental engineering and her master’s degree from Ewha Women’s University in Seoul, South Korea. She is expected to complete her doctorate at Clarkson in May 2003.

“Young-Ji is an excellent student,” said Holsen.  “She is a careful, meticulous researcher who enjoys research a great deal. I am sure she will continue to excel in graduate school and in her future endeavors.”

The APERG Program is funded by the Reuben and Alice Wasser A.P.C. Educational and Research Charitable Remainder Unitrust. It is awarded to students who are either enrolled full-time in a doctoral graduate program or are full-time post-doctoral candidates at any one of the schools in the MASS-AWMA region, who are conducting or planning to conduct research on any issue related to air pollution, air quality, or other closely related areas of study, and are student members of AWMA.

To date, the APERG Program has given out more than $300,000 in awards money.
