Sustainability Advocate Heidenreich Speaks At Clarkson Sept. 6

North Country resident and sustainability advocate Ann Heidenreich will speak on “Applied Sustainability: From Concept to Action” as part of the Clarkson University Sustainability Seminar Series on Thursday, September 6, at 4 p.m. in Room 213 of Bertrand H. Snell Hall.

Heidenreich will describe her personal journey from discovery of the concept of sustainability to the establishment of a non-profit energy company to implement elements of sustainability in the North Country.

Heidenreich has worked for over 20 years on sustainable energy issues as editor of an international news communiqué published in Amsterdam, the Netherlands; as program director for energy at an international environmental organization in Nairobi, Kenya; and as writer/editor for Climate Network Africa in Kenya and EcoNews Africa.

She served on the World Council of Churches Task Team for Climate Change and has written numerous papers on energy-related issues, among others for the World Bank and the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change. She returned to the North Country in 1996 to be part of a local community and practice locally what she had been preaching globally.

The Sustainability Seminar Series is part of Clarkson’s Environmental Sustainability Initiative. The yearlong campus-wide initiative involves teaching, research application and discovery devoted to sustainability on campus. Activities include a campus environmental audit, with recommendations for changes to the campus, which will make it more environmentally sustainable; incorporation of environmental themes into the curriculum; and support of student and faculty research and projects related to environmental sustainability.

Lectures are held every Thursday at 4 p.m. throughout the school year.
