Two Clarkson Students Killed In Vehicle Accident

Clarkson University is extremely saddened to report the deaths of two Clarkson students as the result of a vehicle accident in Bombay, NY. Yesterday evening, a Clarkson University van carrying 13 students went off the road and overturned when it failed to negotiate a sharp curve.

Jefferey Czerpak, a freshman from Clifton Park, NY, was pronounced dead at Massena Memorial Hospital. Matthew Schmigel, a junior from Corfu, NY, died today at Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, VT, from injuries suffered in the accident. The van was returning to campus from a meeting of the FIRST Robotics team at Salmon River Central School in Fort Covington, NY; several of the other students in the van were seriously injured.

“This is a tragic day for Clarkson,” said Vice President for Student Affairs Gary Kelly. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of Jefferey, Matthew and the injured students.”

A counseling center has been set up in the Cheel Campus Center to give Clarkson students a place to congregate and share their grief.

Plans are being made for a memorial service on campus in the near future.
