Clarkson Professor Delivers Lecture In South Africa

Pragasen Pillay, Jean Newell Distinguished Professor in Engineering at Clarkson University, delivered the prestigious 50th Annual Bernard Price Memorial Lecture at the September joint meeting of the Council of the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers (SAIEE) and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The Bernard Price Memorial Lecture series is named for the late Bernard Price, former SAIEE president and founder of the Bernard Price Institutes of Geophysical Research and of Paleontology at the University of the Witwatersrand. Each year, a speaker is invited from the ranks of internationally renowned electrical engineers to deliver the commemorative address at the joint meeting. The speaker also addresses SAIEE members at the Institute’s local centers in Cape Town and Durban, the engineering fraternity in Port Elizabeth and East London, and the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Pillay’s lecture, “University/Industry Collaboration—Case Studies in Energy Efficiency and Power Quality,” examined the collaborations between engineering professors at research-oriented universities in the United States, with private industry and government, and the benefits of these joint ventures. He presented examples of successful projects and collaborations among universities, industry, and government, focusing on the field of energy efficiency and the impact of power quality.

Pragasen Pillay joined Clarkson in 1995. In 1999, he was appointed an adjunct professor in electrical engineering at the University of Cape Town, South Africa. His research focuses on electrical machine drives for industrial and alternate energy applications, power quality and energy efficiency. He received his doctoral degree from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in 1987.  He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is chairman of both the IEEE Industry Applications Society's Industrial Drives Committee and the IEEE Power Engineering Society’s Induction Machinery Sub-Committee.
