Clarkson Works With Nicholville Telephone To Renovate Wiring In Downtown Residence Hall

Clarkson University has linked up with the Nicholville Telephone Company to connect downtown residence hall rooms to the University’s high-speed computer network.

“This upgrade to the wiring infrastructure will provide students living in Congdon Hall with high-quality, high-speed Internet access,” says Vice President for Student Affairs Gary F. Kelly. “In addition, this is part of Clarkson’s larger plan to develop the downtown campus and make it more attractive to new tenants.”

The Nicholville Telephone Company’s installation of 8,000 feet of Category 5 wire in Congdon Hall began in October and was recently completed. Category 5 wire is capable of conducting telephone, high-speed Internet and data transmission over one set of wires.

Installation of the new wire enables students residing at Congdon Hall to utilize the same technology services available to hill campus residents. Now all of Clarkson’s residence halls have two high-speed network connections available in each room.

Clarkson has invested nearly $4 million in renovations and infrastructure improvements to other downtown buildings, including Clarkson Hall and Lewis House. As the University has shifted its operations to the hill campus, reuse of the vacated space is a high priority for Clarkson and the wider Potsdam community. Improved telecommunications infrastructure, made available through wiring projects like these, is an important part of the reuse strategy.

“The wiring we are installing today will serve as the backbone for a wide variety of requirements future tenants will demand,” said Nicholville Telephone Company President Andy McAdoo.

Clarkson’s economic development strategy is already paying off: Clarkson Hall and Lewis House are currently fully occupied by local business tenants, including Nicholville Telephone Company’s subsidiary divisions and Fused Solutions.
