Clarkson Professor Hopke To Deliver Keynote Address At International Air Quality Conference

Philip K. Hopke, Robert A. Plane Professor of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at Clarkson University, will deliver the keynote address at the 16th International Clean Air and Environment Conference to be held in Christchurch, New Zealand, August 18-22, 2002. The Clean Air Society of Australia and New Zealand (CASANZ) is sponsoring the conference.

Each year a distinguished member of the international scientific community is invited to deliver the keynote address at the annual CASANZ meeting. Hopke’s address, “Airborne Particulate Matter Research and Regulations in the United States,” will examine the effects of recent research findings on future government air quality regulations.

CASANZ is a nongovernmental, nonprofit organization formed more than thirty years ago to bring together scientists, environmentalists and others with an interest in air quality and the mechanics of pollution. It publishes a professional journal, Clean Air Journal, and distributes grants and awards to encourage the study of relevant subjects or disciplines.

Hopke is an internationally renowned expert on airborne pollution. His expertise is in the areas of atmospheric chemistry and aerosol physics, and his research interests include multivariate statistical methods for data analysis; characterization of source/receptor relationships for ambient air pollutants; indoor air quality; exposure and risk assessment; and the application of science to public policy. Hopke is editor-in-chief of Aerosol Science and Technology, the scientific journal of the American Association for Aerosol Research. He is currently chair of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee, and has served on a number of National Research Council committees, including the congressionally mandated Committee on Research Priorities for Airborne Particulate Matter and the Committee on Air Quality Management.
