Clarkson Students Provide Technical Support To Local Non-profit Agency

This fall, students in professor Brenton Faber’s technical communications class at Clarkson University have taken the skills they have acquired inside the classroom and applied them directly to a real-life business situation in the outside world. The students provided technical communications consulting to North County Legal Services (NCLS), a St. Lawrence County non-profit organization dedicated to providing free legal services to people with low incomes, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The semester-long project was designed to provide valuable hands-on experience for the students and technical support for NCLS.

One student group, working with NCLS to create a new interior office design, identified the need for a more client-friendly reception area and improved office flow. Another group designed and produced an information video for potential NCLS clients. Other students helped record and interpret area demographics, and still others made improvements to NCLS’s external communications by designing new pamphlets for the North Country organization. Some of the students’ suggestions and ideas are already being implemented by NCLS.

“The fresh eyes and ideas that Clarkson students have hold the potential to improve our services,” said NCLS staff attorney Chris Rediehs. “Working with them has been enjoyable and beneficial to NCLS.”

“This has been a great opportunity to develop my communications skills and help a local organization,” said Mindy Collins, a senior from Colton, N.Y., majoring in technical communications. “I am excited that I am able to participate in this project and I feel confident that the skills I have learned in this class will help me in the professional world.”

The cooperative program was completed this week. The Technical Communications department at Clarkson coordinates a number of experiential projects each semester in which students give their time and expertise to local organizations while acquiring practical experience.
