The New Shanghai Circus, an award winning, highly acclaimed troupe of Chinese acrobats, will bring their amazing feats of artistry and athleticism to Potsdam on Monday, February 4, 2002. The show begins at 7 p.m. and will be held in Clarkson University’s downtown Snell Hall Auditorium. The event is free and is part of the “World in Potsdam Festival” Diversity Festival.shanghai1

The New Shanghai Circus is recognized as one of China’s finest troupes of acrobatic performers. Highly skilled, rigorously trained performers and contortionists amaze worldwide audiences with gravity-defying balancing acts. Ordinary household items such as plates, chairs, wine glasses and bowls are sent spinning, flying or are stacked precariously on the hands (or feet) of the performers. Contortionists effortlessly fold, turn and twist their bodies into postures of grace and beauty that will amaze circus goers.

Acrobatics has a more than 2,000-year tradition in China and is touted as one of its biggest tourist attractions next to the Great Wall. Once merchants displayed skills such as hoop diving and pottery juggling and spinning during ancient harvest festivals. As skills developed, they were passed down from generation to generation, and evolved into a highly prized form of folk art and one of China’s cultural treasures.

The World in Potsdam Diversity Festival is an annual community celebration featuring the music, dance, food, and crafts of the people and cultures around the world. The Festival, originally scheduled in the fall, was rescheduled for Sunday, January 27, in light of the September 11 tragedy. It will be held in Clarkson University’s Cheel Campus Center from 1-6 p.m. The Village of Potsdam, Clarkson University and SUNY Potsdam co-sponsor the Festival. The Sweetgrass Foundation and KeyBank are major contributors to the event.
