Clarkson Professor Receives Engineering Education Award

Clarkson University Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Professor Kenneth D. Visser of Potsdam has been chosen as a recipient of the Society of Automotive Engineers' (SAE) 2002 Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award. The award provides an important link between education and industry by offering young engineering educators opportunities to exchange views with practicing engineers.

Engineering is an applied science, and relating concepts to their application in the real world is key to a student's understanding of the subject matter, said Visser. "Since the majority of our students will go into the industrial arena, it is crucial that we expose them to real-world challenges. Attending the conference will give me the latest perspective on problems in the field and will enable me to view first01-114hand the advances made by others around the world. What I learn there will be shared with my students in the classroom."

Kenneth Visser received his doctoral degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. He came to Clarkson in 1999 from the Boeing Company where he was involved in the design of a high-speed civil transport. His research interests are primarily experimental and include such areas as aerodynamics, aircraft design, sustainable energy and experimental measurement techniques. In addition to teaching aircraft design at Clarkson, Visser is the faculty adviser for the Clarkson student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and for the Design, Build and Fly Team.

Former SAE president Ralph R. Teetor established the award program that bears his name in 1964 to emphasize the important relationship between the engineering industry and engineering education. Since then, it has provided more than 800 beginning educators with the opportunity to enhance their teaching by developing a better understanding of and closer working relationship with practicing engineers.
