The Clarkson chapter was chosen as the Region One Distinguished Chapter of the Year from a field of 60 chapters located throughout the northeastern United States and Canada. The Clarkson chapter was also named Region One Small Chapter of the Year.

Other awards bestowed upon the Clarkson chapter included: Chapter of the Month (October and November 2001); Chapter of the Fall Semester; and Most Improved Chapter of the Fall Semester. Clarkson freshman Martrisha Atkins received individual recognition as Member of the Month for December/January. The Clarkson chapter also received two development program awards: Outstanding Achievement in Membership and Outstanding Achievement in Cultural Awareness.

As regional winners of the Distinguished Chapter and Small Chapter awards, the Clarkson chapter will go on to compete at the national NSBE conference to be held later this month in Orlando, Fla.

“We are pleased that the NSBE chapter at Clarkson has been recognized for its outstanding work and accomplishments of the last year,” said Vicki Clark, chapter adviser and assistant to the director of Clarkson’s Pipeline of Educational Programs, which provides support for underrepresented students in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. “Our chapter is extremely active. Our members have organized study-a-thons and workshops, sponsored a corporate reception to initiate professional networking, created a technical design team, held community fundraisers and sponsored cultural awareness activities.”

The Clarkson University Chapter of NSBE was founded in 1990 by alumna LaDawn Holley, who received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1992. Holley is a regional account manager with Agilent Technologies and was recently elected to the Clarkson University Board of Trustees.

NSBE is comprised of more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses and is divided into six regions. To meet NSBE’s objectives of developing students’ interest in technical and scientific disciplines, the national organization sponsors high school and junior high school outreach programs, a national communications network, conferences and career fairs, and supports the efforts of local chapters.
