Dana Barry To Serve As Visiting Professor In Japan

Clarkson University Center for Advanced Materials Processing (CAMP) Technical Writer Dr. Dana M. Barry of Canton, N.Y., has accepted an invitation to serve as a visiting professor at Suzuka National College of Technology in Japan this August.barry

Dr. Barry will present seminars on an innovative method for teaching college and high school chemistry that uses music and science experiments to present the subject to students in an exciting and unusual way.  She developed the method in collaboration with Professor Hideyuki Kanematsu of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Suzuka.

Dr. Barry prepared the chemical experiments and composed the music and wrote the lyrics for chemistry songs used in the program and Kanematsu translated all the lessons and songs into Japanese. Other project collaborators include Professors Tatsumasa Kobayashi and Hiroshi Shimofuruya at Suzuka.

Participants in the project’s development have included Clarkson University, Canton Central School and Edwards-Knox Central School in the United States, and Suzuka National College of Technology, Takada High School and Kanbe High School in Japan.

Dr. Barry, a certified chemist, recently received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the northern New York section of the American Chemical Society for her efforts to bring and translate the excitement of chemistry to youth of all ages. She also serves as an external professor for Ansted University in Malaysia. She is the author of five books and numerous journal publications and has received a number of honors, including six APEX Awards for Publication Excellence.

Dr. Barry’s trip to Japan is sponsored by Suzuka National College of Technology with project support from the northern New York section of the American Chemical Society.
