Clarkson University Senior David Young Honored With Frederica Clarkson Award At Commencement

David A. Young, son of David and Stella Young of Rome, N.Y., received the Frederica Clarkson Award during Clarkson University's 109th commencement ceremony on Sunday, May 12.

The award was established in 1921 in the will of Frederica Clarkson, sister of Thomas S. Clarkson, for whom the University is named.

Young, a senior aeronautical engineering and physics dual major, was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full university faculty, based on his scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement.

Young graduated from Clarkson with a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0 out of a possible 4.0, and was a Presidential Scholar for the past eight semesters. He has served as a teaching assistant in the Physics Department, a physics tutor, and a mentor coordinator for the advanced physics laboratory. Young was also a member of the Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society and the Phi Kappa Phi honors society. He was the co-president of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Clarkson University Chapter and a member of the Design, Build and Fly Team.

In the fall, Young will enter graduate school at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Last year, Young was named a recipient of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship for the 2000-2001 academic year. The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award for students pursing careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering. Other awards and honors include the Clarkson Scholastic Scholarship, the Mechanical & Aeronautical Engineering Staff Award, and a National Science Foundation three-year graduate fellowship. Young has also published two scientific papers and has been a summer intern at the Air Force Research Laboratory in Rome, N.Y., where he received the Laboratory's Irv Gordy Award.
