Local Award Recognizes Clarkson Students' Efforts On Behalf Of Area Youth And Economic Development

Clarkson University’s Clifton-Fine School Partnership received this year’s St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce Business/Education Partnership of the Year Award. The Clifton-Fine Partnership is a joint effort among Clarkson students, Clifton-Fine Middle School students and community sponsors to design a marketing campaign to foster tourism and economic development in the Clifton-Fine area.

The award was presented during a chamber luncheon on May 30 in Canton.

The Clifton-Fine Partnership is part of Clarkson’s School of Business Educational Partnership Program, which brings together K-12 school students in a learning environment with the local business community and Clarkson graduate and undergraduate business students. The collaborative projects are designed to prepare students at all educational levels for a rapidly changing workplace by refining management, communication and technology skills.

Three graduate and one undergraduate Clarkson students managed the efforts of the middle school students as they worked in conjunction with the Clifton-Fine Economic Development Corporation, SUNY Potsdam, the Wanakena Ranger School and the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce to promote tourism in the area. Projects included the creation of a mock e-business on the Internet, the development of tourism materials and the production of a video to advertise area attractions.

“Experiential programs like the Clifton-Fine Partnership offer a valuable opportunity for our students to be more involved in local community affairs and to address the economic challenges of the region,” said Christine Frascatore, coordinator of Clarkson’s Business Educational Partnership Programs. “It is a great honor to receive this award.”

“The Clifton-Fine Partnership demonstrates how business and education working together can benefit our young people and impact our community and its future,” added Pam Whittet, education committee chairperson for the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. “Our students enrich their education through applied, collaborative learning and real world problem solving. And the community benefits through the efforts to bring tourism and economic opportunities into our region.”

In late April, the Clifton-Fine Partnership was featured at a professional luncheon hosted by St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES, which brought together more than 200 school administrators and business people to discuss the importance of educational partnerships.
