Community Benefits From Clarkson Business Students' Successful Start-up Companies

This year, freshmen at the Clarkson University School of Business got a dose of real-life entrepreneurship, and Potsdam received $3,000 in programs and gifts that benefited the young and the elderly in the community.

Introduction to Entrepreneurship, a first-year course required of all business majors, challenges students to create their own companies, develop products or services, secure funding, design a marketing campaign and negotiate with vendors. The purpose of the course is to give students a real-life, hands-on learning experience that provides a solid foundation for critical, analytical and lateral thinking about business management.

This year, some 140 students developed and operated three start-up businesses: Out of Bounds Fleece, a company that sold high-quality fleece blankets; Antifreeze, a business that sold warm winter hats and specialty T-shirts; and CQ (Clarkson Quality), which sold multifunction pocket knives.

The student companies combined their profits, totaling more than $3,000, to finance the community projects, which included the purchase of a 53-inch Sony television for the Potsdam Nursing Home and the staging of a “Kid’s Karnival,” which was held on the Clarkson campus and hosted by the University students. More than 125 local children attended the event that featured activities, games, food, music and prizes.

“All three student companies worked incredibly hard to get their businesses up and running,” said Clarkson School of Business student Kim Gillette. “It was an amazing learning experience. We wanted to celebrate our own hard work and success, as well as offer something great to the community. All in all, we were pleased by the community’s enthusiastic responses to our programs, and we had a great time ourselves!”
