Clarkson's Marocco Receives Board Certification In Geriatrics

Clarkson University Department of Physical Therapy’s Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education Samantha Marocco of Saranac Lake recently received board certification as a clinical specialist in geriatric physical therapy. Marocco is one of only 29 physical therapists in New York state to be certified in geriatrics.

To become a specialist, individuals must demonstrate advanced training in the specialty area, meet experience requirements and pass a rigorous certification examination. This year only 39 physical therapists in the country met the requirements necessary for board certification in geriatrics. There are currently 516 certified geriatric specialists in the United States.

Marocco has been an academic coordinator in the Department of Physical Therapy at Clarkson for the past two years and is responsible for coordinating and supervising the clinical fieldwork assignments that physical therapy students must complete to be eligible for a degree.

In addition, she works two afternoons a week at the Community Nursing Home of Potsdam. Most of her work there is retraining elders to complete functional tasks while recovering from pathologies such as pneumonia, fractured hips and stroke.

Marocco received a bachelor of science degree in physical therapy from Russell Sage College.
