Clarkson Construction Management Team Wins Regional Competition

Clarkson University’s Construction Management Team took top place finishes at the Associated Schools of Construction Region One Construction Management Competition held recently in Fairfield, N.J. Competing against 11 other university teams, the Clarkson students finished in first place in the commercial building division and placed second in the heavy-highway division.

As a regional winner, the Construction Management Team received $2,000 and qualifies to participate in the national competition that will be held in Dallas next April.

“The Clarkson students did an outstanding job demonstrating an understanding of their projects and a willingness to find creative solutions and work within the guidelines issued,” said team advisor and Clarkson alumnus Randy Pray, a project manager for Murnane Building Contractors. “Both teams worked very hard after hours and on weekends preparing for this competition. Their accomplishments are well-deserved.”

The construction management competition provides students with an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom to a realistic construction management situation. Students are given a real-life project submitted by industry, and must develop a schedule and proposal for construction, submit estimates of costs and quantities and give oral and written presentations to a panel of professionals from the construction management industry.

The commercial building team’s project was a pre-design presentation to a client who was looking to build an addition to a genetics laboratory. The Clarkson team was praised by the judges for their ability to “think on their feet.” The heavy-highway team worked on the jacking and partial replacement of a center-pivot swing span bridge for the Long Island Railroad.

Members of the Clarkson team include: Jared Ferber ’03, Edison, N.J.; Jennifer Christ ‘04, Eden, N.Y.; Kathryn Cyr ’04, Gorham, Maine; Brian Dorman ’04, Pittsburg, N.H.; Jonathan Tardiff ’04, Berlin, N.H.; Jada Baillargeon ’03, Milton, Vt.; Erik Wagner ‘0, Buffalo, N.Y.; Erin O’Driscoll ‘04, Evans Mills, N.Y.; Bryan Tremblay ‘03, Berlin, N.H.; Robert Curto ‘03, Cohoes, N.Y.; Jeffrey Crandall ‘03, Brookfield, N.Y.; Aaron White 03, Watertown, N.Y.; Christopher Konik ’03, Gloversville, N.Y.; Barry Anctil ‘03, Rouses Point, N.Y.; Michael Parkes ‘04, Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; and Mark Sposato ’03, Waterloo, N.Y..

Team advisers this year include Pray, Jim Francesconi of Murnane Building Contractors and Spencer Thew, adjunct assistant professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Clarkson.

Murnane Building Contractors has been a sponsor of the team at Clarkson for the last five years, providing financial and professional assistance since its inception in 1998. The team also receives support from the New York State Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America and the Clarkson University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

The Construction Management Team is part of Clarkson University's SPEED (Students Projects for Engineering Experience and Design) program, which promotes multidisciplinary project based learning opportunities for more than 250 undergraduates annually. SPEED projects involve engineering design and analysis, fabrication, and the enhancement of professional competencies such as budget management, effective teamwork and communication skills. SPEED receives its primary financial support from Alcoa, Corning, Eastman Kodak, the General Electric Fund and Procter & Gamble. SPEED was recognized with the 2001 Boeing Outstanding Educator Award and the 2002 Corporate and Foundation Alliance Award for its exceptional contributions to improving undergraduate engineering education.
