Anthony G. Collins Named President Of Clarkson University

The Clarkson University Board of Trustees announced today the appointment of Anthony G. Collins to serve as Clarkson’s 16th president. Collins will takeAnthony Collins office on July 1, 2003, upon the retirement of current President Denny Brown.

“Tony Collins has been a driving force behind Clarkson’s positive growth during his years at the institution,” said Board of Trustees Chair John S. Welch Jr. “He is moving into the presidency with extensive support from the campus and the Trustees. I look forward to working with Tony in the coming years as we seek to realize Clarkson’s potential.”

Collins is the current provost of Clarkson. Collins has been a leader in developing project-based team learning at Clarkson, for which the University has received national recognition. He has brought an interdisciplinary focus to teaching, research and learning, and has been actively involved in major fund-raising initiatives.

Collins grew up outside Melbourne, Australia, and earned an undergraduate civil engineering degree from Monash University, then a master’s degree from Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. He returned to Australia initially to develop a small environmental engineering consulting company and then to work for Utah Development Company, a rapidly expanding and profitable coal and iron mining company. His work there on the ground and surface water issues generated by huge open-pit mines inspired him to return to Lehigh four years later to begin the Ph.D. studies needed for a university research and teaching career.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1982, Collins began his career at Clarkson as an assistant professor, and later served as department chair and dean. He has received the John W. Graham Faculty Research Award, the Distinguished Teaching Award and two Outstanding Advising Awards.

Collins resides in Potsdam with his wife, Karen, and four children.
