Clarkson University Named One Of Top Universities For Entrepreneurial Programs By Entrepreneur Magazine

The Clarkson University School of Business ranks among the nation’s top entrepreneurial education programs, according to a recent survey published in the April issue of Entrepreneur Magazine.

Of the 700 entrepreneurship programs considered for the study, Clarkson ranked in the second tier of the top 50 regionally recognized academic programs in the country. Schools are listed alphabetically within their tiers.

“Our students know how to be entrepreneurs because they actually run businesses,” said Tim Sugrue, dean of the Clarkson School of Business. “Every business student gets hands-on entrepreneurial experience, in addition to a broad base of course work. It is this kind of comprehensiveness that makes Clarkson’s programs one of the best in the nation.”

More than 30 criteria were used to judge collegiate programs, including course offerings, teaching and research faculty, business-community outreach, research centers and institutes, advisory boards, off-campus programs, and faculty and alumni evaluations.

At Clarkson, first-year students learn business theory in conjunction with establishing and running their own enterprise. Sophomores have the option of joining Venture@Moore House, a learning community in which students establish and operate a business while living together in a residence hall. Juniors tackle business case studies and seniors often work as consultants to local clients.

Students can also get involved in community outreach programs, including the Clarkson School of Business Educational Partnership Program that brings together K-12 students in a learning partnership with the business community and Clarkson graduate and undergraduate students. Extracurricular learning opportunities are available through the Clarkson chapters of Students in Free Enterprise and Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization, which have received regional and national honors for community programs and start-up ventures.

“From the moment they step foot on the Clarkson campus, our students are challenged to utilize creative and integrative thinking, work within teams, launch new ventures, and develop the flexible skills necessary for later success in an integrated global marketplace,” added Sugrue.

The ranking is the latest honor for the Clarkson School of Business, which was also recently ranked 13th in the nation for its global supply chain management program by U.S. News & World Reports America’s Best Colleges 2003 Web site. And for the last two years, Clarkson’s undergraduate business program was one of two finalists for the prestigious USASBE National Award in Undergraduate Entrepreneurship Education.
