Clarkson Undergraduate Receives National Technical Communications Scholarship

Clarkson University student Erin O’Driscoll of Evans Mills, N.Y., a junior majoring in technical communications, is a recipient of a 2003-04 scholarship fromO'driscoll the Society for Technical Communications (STC), a national organization dedicated to advancing the arts and sciences of technical communications.

O’Driscoll is one of only two undergraduates in the nation to receive the $2,000 scholarship this year. She is the tenth Clarkson student to be recognized for excellence with an STC scholarship.

“This is a great achievement and an honor that Erin richly deserves,” said Bill Karis, professor and chair of the Department of Technical Communications. “She is highly respected by the faculty and her peers. Whenever a faculty member comes up with a new research idea and needs to engage one of the students in it, the first choice is always Erin.”

O’Driscoll was encouraged to apply for the scholarship by Karis, and credits the opportunities she has received in the Technical Communications Department for making her a successful scholarship candidate.

“There are always a lot of research projects going on in the department so there are many opportunities to get involved,” O’Driscoll explained. “I have also been a teaching assistant for four semesters for two different classes. This has allowed me to teach and also have a hand in developing on-line course materials. This has really helped me prepare for my career.”

O’Driscoll is also the recipient of the department’s Turpin Outstanding Junior Technical Communications Award. She maintains a 3.6 grade-point average and has been on the dean’s list for five consecutive semesters. This summer she will be working for General Electric developing on-line training materials.

She plans to attend graduate school and is interested in pursuing a career designing and developing educational software, Web pages, and other multimedia materials for use in a classroom or corporate training setting.

STC offers scholarships to students who exhibit the potential for contributing to the technical communications profession, based on high scholastic achievement and strong recommendations. STC is the largest organization of its kind, with more than 25,000 members worldwide.
