Hooper, a mechanical engineering major, was selected for the $1,000 award by a vote of the full University faculty, based on his scholarship and promise of outstanding achievement.

Hooper graduated from Clarkson with a cumulative grade-point average of 4.0 out of a possible 4.0. He is a member of the Honors Program and was a Presidential Scholar for the past eight semesters. Hooper is also a Robert McNair Scholar. This is an educational program established in 1986 by the U.S. Department of Education and named after astronaut member Robert E. The program provides academic support services, research opportunities and involvement in scholarly activities to first-generation and underrepresented students.

Hooper has co-written three research articles with Clarkson faculty members that were published in professional publications. Last year he was named Junior of the Year by the Mechanical Engineering Department, and the year before he was Pi Tau Sigma Sophomore of the Year in Mechanical Engineering. He has also worked as a tutor and as an undergraduate research assistant for research on the laser induced plasma technique for nanoparticle removal.

He was a recipient of the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship in 2002. The Goldwater Scholarship is the preeminent undergraduate award for students pursuing careers in the fields of mathematics, the natural science, and engineering. Hooper was one of only 309 undergraduates in the country selected that year based on academic merit.
