Clarkson University Forms School Of Arts And Sciences

Clarkson University will combine its current School of Liberal Arts and School of Science into a new School of Arts and Sciences as of July 1.

“The combination of these schools represents a significant step for Clarkson to further the development of creative academic and research programs, and to reduce the barriers between departments and schools,” said Clarkson Provost and President-elect Anthony G. Collins. “This step will facilitate and enhance the powerful interdisciplinary learning and research that have become distinguishing features of Clarkson’s reputation. It is my firm belief that three strong and vibrant schools of Engineering, Business, and Arts and Sciences will serve Clarkson well into the future.”

Prof. David Powers will serve as interim dean of the new school. Prof. Jerry Gravander has accepted the position of interim associate dean.

Both Professors Powers and Gravander have extensive administrative experience and will work toward objectives that include developing curricular and research opportunities that capitalize on the restructuring, and establishing a School of Arts and Sciences Advisory Council.

“The response to the idea of combining the schools has been positive,” continued Collins. “The plan was discussed with the faculty of both current schools and there was a general sense of excitement over the research and curricular possibilities that the merger might bring.”

The merger will begin with the current department/division structure in place. It will then be re-examined as the restructuring process develops. A search committee will be formed to recommend individuals for the permanent dean and associate dean positions.

Professor Edward Moczydlowski has accepted the position of chair of the Department of Biology. Moczydlowski has held positions at the University of Cincinnati, and most recently was a professor at the Yale University School of Medicine.
