Master's Degree Program Gets New Name And New Format To Reflect Changing Industry And Student Needs

Clarkson University has redesigned its engineering and manufacturing master’s degree program to offer maximum flexibility for enrolled students and to respond to the changing global industry.

As part of the new design, the program has been renamed the Engineering & Global Operations Management (EGOM) Executive Master’s Program. The program draws on the strengths and resources of Clarkson’s schools of Business, Engineering, and Arts & Sciences. Instruction takes place in an informal atmosphere that promotes collaborative learning, problem solving, teamwork, leadership skills and global vision.

“The new name better reflects the broadening scope of the program’s curriculum,” said Farzad Mahmoodi, executive director of Clarkson’s Center for Global Competitiveness and an architect of the new curriculum and format. “The program is designed for working engineers and technical managers interested in updating skills and learning about the leading trends in technology, operations management and business. The core courses have been revised to better reflect modern industry needs. Also, the program delivery format has been changed to offer participants more options for completing the degree.”

Under the new format, participants will be able to take advantage of two three-week on-campus sessions rather than one five-week session. Web-based offerings will also increase to at least three courses each year. Thus the participants will have more options when choosing classes and can create schedules that meet their needs.

“While the new format will allow participants to complete the entire program on-campus, it also offers the opportunity to complete the program by taking a combination of on-campus and Web-based courses,” added Mahmoodi. “This makes it easier for individuals to pursue an advanced degree while working at the same time.”

The highly successful interdisciplinary degree program was developed in partnership with industry. Companies currently sponsoring program participants include: AT&T, Alcoa, Bank of America, Carrier, Colgate Palmolive, Cooper Cameron, Corning, Eastman Kodak, General Electric, IBM, Johnson & Johnson, JSC Wire & Cable, Mead Westvaco, New York Power Authority, Sprint, Stanley Works, Welch Allyn, World Kitchen, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, and Xerox.

The program is offered through Clarkson’s Center for Global Competitiveness, which promotes and enhances competitive positions of organizations worldwide by providing educational experiences in interdisciplinary engineering and management at undergraduate, graduate and executive levels.
