High School "Young Scholars" Test Their Minds At Clarkson

Clarkson University’s Young Scholars, an innovative and challenging program for accelerated students from New York and New England is underway July 13-20.

The Young Scholars summer program offers students an opportunity to participate in an interdisciplinary curriculum combining engineering, marketing, ethics and social policy.

The eight-day, team-based project course includes lecture and laboratory investigations by three Clarkson professors, use of computer spreadsheets and graphics, Internet and Web access, field trips, and guest speakers.  It is a stimulating program in a real-world setting that fosters intellectual development, communication skills, and cooperative problem solving.

This year’s participants will form two to three teams charged with designing and marketing portable housing.  Each team will design a house for a specific function and market.  Students will work on every aspect of the project, but will also focus on group-specific projects that arise during the week.

At the end of the week students will present and defend their design and business plan to an audience of professionals and others involved with portable housing.  The public is welcome to attend this presentation on Sunday, July 20, at 1 p.m. in CAMP Building Room 177. The course will also provide a workshop, which provides insight into the sometimes difficult transition from high school to college.

This annual summer program is made available through The Clarkson School and Clarkson University.  Students interested in participating in the future, should visit the Web site at  Students can also contact their guidance counselor for an application form and information regarding the program.  If the school does not have information on the Young Scholars summer program, or if students have any questions, they may contact Chad Tessier of The Clarkson School at 315-268-4425.
